Introduction

The Sweden Democrats are the second-largest party in parliament. They support the centre-right government from outside the cabinet under the 2022 Tidö Agreement and influence policy through that arrangement.

Positions

  1. Economy

Favour lower taxes for pensioners and low- and middle-income earners; want a smaller state in some areas while protecting welfare benefits seen as linked to citizenship and contribution.

  2. Immigration

Most restrictive line in parliament: cut asylum numbers to the legal minimum, expand voluntary return programmes, tighten citizenship rules, and prioritise integration through Swedish language and work.

  3. Crime

Significantly longer sentences for gang crime, more police and surveillance powers, and deportation of foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes.

  4. Climate & Energy

Sceptical of rapid transition costs to households; strongly back large-scale nuclear expansion, oppose new onshore wind power, and want to slow some EU climate rules.

  5. Healthcare

Want the state, rather than the 21 regions, to be primarily responsible for healthcare to reduce regional differences in waiting times and quality.

  6. Defense & NATO

Now support NATO membership and back continued increases in defence spending to at least the alliance's 2% of GDP target.

  7. EU

Eurosceptic: oppose deeper EU integration, oppose adopting the euro, want to repatriate powers, but do not advocate leaving the EU.
